GND Cairns Painters is steeped in history. We are a third-generation family company which had its roots in South Australia when a young Tom Stallbaum arrived to start a new life after the devastation of the Second World War. Tom had been indentured to his father in Germany after the war as a Painter & Signwriter and bought those skills to Australia.

Tom fell in love with his new home and after working for SA Rail for two years to repay his fare to Australia he stared his own paint contracting business. Tom soon gained a reputation as a hard worker and a man who had an eye for detail and produced high quality work and had life long friends from SA until his passing.

By the mid 1970’s Tom was drawn to a new challenge and moved his family to Cairns where he established GND Cairns Painters. Around this time his son Glen joined the Australian Air Force where he served for 7 years before leaving to join the growing family business in 1983. Glen has been with the business ever since.

The company opened successful retail stores which formed a lifelong relationship with national iconic Victoria based paint manufacturer Haymes Paint. Glen served as a director on two paint retailer co-op group boards, became one of Haymes Paints largest outlets in Australia (and the largest outside Victoria). The strong relationship with the Haymes family continues to this day.
